The Tomato creative agency was formed in 1991 by Steve Baker, Dirk Van Dooren, Karl Hyde, Richard Smith, Simon Taylor, John Warwicker and Graham Wood, who were joined by Jason Kedgley in 1997 and Michael Horsham in 1998.

Principally understood as a design group who work for many international clients including Sony, Nike, Levis, Coca-Cola and The Victoria & Albert Museum, Tomato also works across a range of fields ranging from film, branding, music, television and cinema commercials, to advertising, books, architecture and interactive media.

They have exhibited internationally and lecture and hold workshops widely. Since 1997, Tomato has been a consultant to the British Government on the creative industries. Out of this success, Tomato Films was formed in 1998 and is run by Jeremy Barrett.

Tomato Interactive was founded in 1999 by Tom Roope, Anthony Rodgers and Joel Baumann; former members of Antirom, who had strong creative relationships with Tomato. Their innovative design and inventive execution within existing interactive platforms is fused with a commitment to developing entirely new media solutions for clients including Ron Arad Associates, Selfridges, The Goethe-Institut and the group Underworld.

Tomato have more recently produced a website for New York architectural practice, fieldoperations.net, completed project work for Nokia and Adidas and Installation work for Salvatore Ferragamo.

Live Music from:

PART CHIMP
Back in Nottingham for the first time in over two years, in support of their new album, ‘Thriller’. My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr play loud but their tunes have never really had the heaviness to match their mammoth volume. Part Chimp, however, match their cacophonous sound levels with the weightiest rock imaginable. Their records are released by Rock Action Records (founded and maintained by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai).

SOUVARIS
Souvaris are a 5 piece rock band from Nottingham, UK, comprising of two guitarists, bass, synths and drums. Now nine years old, the band has spent the best part of a decade building their reputation as one of the UK’s most inventive and versatile acts. This autumn will see a new split release with Bordeaux’s excellent art-rockers Sincabeza on Gringo Records. Having played countless shows with bands ranging from Do Make Say Think to Polar Bear, The Shipping News to Thee More Shallows, Fly Pan Am to old friends Explosions in the Sky, Souvaris deliver a live show that is as entertaining as it is subtle, as direct as it is layered.

BAD GUYS
BAD GUYS played their first gig at ATP curated by The Melvins and Mike Patton. Neither knew BAD GUYS were gonna play but they did it anyway. You ever seen someone crowdsurf in a living room? BAD GUYS have. You ever seen Jared from The Melvins force his way through your window to get to your gig? BAD GUYS have. You ever trashed a place so bad it needs to be rebuilt from scratch? BAD GUYS have.

GUILTY PARENTS
Punk trio knocking out snarling garage punk which’ll make your nuts swing taking in influences like Die Kreuzen, Make-Up, The Mummies and the Bad Form.

EXTNDDNTWRK
Special guest DJ

studio, or designers pad, all of the money raised through the auction will
charity organisation.

As a non-profit organisation, DAHRA exists to
promote and raise awareness amongst those involved in the creative
industry of their social, political and ethical responsibilities. In order
to achieve this goal DAHRA focuses on a variety of issues that designers
are passionate about and creates an environment where these voices can be
united and heard. Through various mediums our members are encouraged to
express their opinions in order to raise awareness, not only about these
various causes, but also amongst other creatives and the responsibilities
they have.

3 Minutes is the second publication from non-profit organisation Designers Against Human Rights Abuse (DAHRA) and the second collaboration between DAHRA and Tibet Relief Fund.

The premise of the book is to show the full extent of the Tibetan conflict through 10 diverse and extremely powerful 3-minute interviews, each describing the 3 minutes that changed their lives. This idea is reflected in the covers of each booklet, which separately make beautiful abstract covers but together form to make a €˜”3″€™.

Contributors were asked to translate these 3 minute interviews into 16 printed page booklets using primarily typography. The result is a book made up of 10 beautifully designed booklets from some of the world’s best designers showcasing considered and stunning typography.

The book is available for £10 + p&p worldwide with all proceeds going to Tibet Relief Fund and being distributed by Subism

Cancer is such a pervasive killer these days that few of us go through life untouched by the disease. We’ve decided to do something about it by launching the Memories project and the outcome will be a beautiful art book. Proceeds from the sales of Memories will go towards cancer support (charity TBA).

Memories will look at the thoughts and experiences of individuals who have survived cancer, as well as those of people who have lost loved ones. There will be ten stories inside, each looking at one person’s recollection of a particular day in the struggle against cancer. For each of these ‘memories’ a dozen leading artists, illustrators and designers will be creating their own visual response. Two further stories will go ‘open brief’ and we’ll be inviting creatives worldwide to make their own images to accompany the text. The best submissions will go into the book.

That makes for 12 touching stories, and 144 smashing pieces of artwork

The project is being launched this summer by Designers Against Human Rights Abuse (DAHRA), Subism, OneTenEleven Media and editor Garrick Webster. Along with a number of writers and, of course, all the image contributors, they’ll be volunteering their time and skills to the project. We expect it will take a year to complete, culminating in the launch of Memories and an exhibition.

Thanks to Luke O’Neill for the above graphic.

I was at the launch as part of the Subism team, Subism were commissioned to produce a wall of live artwork featured at the launch. 2 of Subism’s artists N4T4 and Phil Blake (Philth) drew inspiration from a double page spread from Noise Five. The artwork evolved over the evening and featured a little surprise as the lights dimmed the glow in the dark spray paint was activated.

The design legend was fist on at OFFF 09. He talked about dangerous design, telling us to “make trouble” and “take risks”. Neville Showed past work and took us through the redesign of the Times Newspaper. However did reminded me slightly of a history of a design lecture at college.

Karsten Schmidt (TOXI & POSTSPECTACULAR)//

I had been looking forward to seeing Karsten at OFFF. I have been following his work for a while now. His presentation met my expectations, presenting an outstanding range of work, from his involvement with universal everything to work for Audi & Nokia.

U.V.A.//

U.V.A showed us an impressive array of audio generated visuals for Massive Attack & The Chemical Brothers. An installation for V&A and some impressive interactive work.

Day 02//

OneSize//

A brief introduction to the thought process behind the OFFF Sponsors credits, then 8 mins of 36 crazy logo animations cooked up in a Lab! Great stuff from OneSize.

PES//

PES provided the OFFF crowd with jaw dropping stop motion graphics. Showing a human surfboard and animated coins and socks! How you even make objects do those crazy moves is beyond me!

Check out the Twisted films of PES:
eatpes.com

Paula Scher//

Paula Scher’s career to date has been outstanding. Paula talked us through a huge volume and range of work from her career. With a more traditional approach to design and some fantastic typography work. One of the highlights for me from OFFF 09.

Joshua Davis//

Having seen Joshua Davis at MadInSpain last year I knew what to expect from Joshua, however he impressed me with the way his work is progressing in new directions. Joshua rocks a crowd like no one else and certainly got a big reaction to his interaction with the crowd. I was impressed with his collaboration with Float 4 to produce the Interactive Wall at OFFF, combining his abstractions with new technology.

Day 03//

Si Scott Studio//

After spending a bit of time hanging with Si in Lisbon I was looking forward to seeing him speak. Si did Leeds proud and overcame sound problems delivering a fresh and inspirational talk. Si speaks from the heart and showed the audience through his impressive range of work. From college work & winning a D&AD young blood award through to current work for clients such as Madonna and Sellfridges. I think Si shocked the crowd by telling them 90% of his work is done by hand.

Digital Kitchen//

Digital Kitchen delivered a well put together presentation taking us through the creation of their True Blood title sequence. I would have liked to have seen a wider range of projects but their presentation style and slides more than made up for this.

Links:
d-kitchen.com

Stefan Sagmeister//

After coming on stage in a rather fetching spotted dress I was unsure what to expect from Stefan Sagmeister. He spoke about a list of things that make him happy and how much that is influenced by design. An impressive volume of conceptual work was shown, from the album covers he is renowned for through to crazy installations. Highlights of work for me were the Being not Truthful installation and the identity for Casa de Musica in Portugal. Stefan had some important messages mainly to be self confident and find happiness in your design process.

Kyle Cooper//

Kyle Cooper & Prologue films gave the final presentation at OFFF 09. Talking us through outstanding title sequences for films such as Ironman, Superman Returns, se7en and many more. Following with the creation of the OFFF main title sequence and the process behind it. A great end to 3 days of inspirational presentation all with some message teaching us to “Fail Gracfully”

Since 2001, OFFF festival has been held in Barcelona, becoming the globally recognized and trendsetting event it is today. The three-day festival showcases top digital artists, web, print and interactive designers, motion graphics studios, and new music adventurous. OFFF festival provides insight into all culture media platforms.

But OFFF is more than an event about any of these disciplines. More than a design conference, a multimedia trade fair, or a digital animation festival. OFFF is an enthusiastic celebration of a new visual culture.

After eight years on the frontline of digital arts events, OFFF has trascended its own nature as a festival to become a synonym for modernity, both aesthetic and technological.

OFFF is spreading the work of a generation of creators that are breaking all kind of limits. Those separating the commercial arena from the worlds of art and design; music from illustration, or ink and chalk from pixels. Artists that have grown with the web and receive inspiration from digital tools, even when their canvas is not the screen.

OFFF dreams about the future, and then writes the code for it.

OFFF ‘09 Catalogue Submission.

Brief:

our artwork must be inspired by the theme of the festival “THIS ISN’T FLYING, THIS IS FALLING WITH STYLE · FAIL GRACEFULLY @ OFFF

· International call for entries for designers, programmers, illustrators and visual artists that want to show their work in the festival’s catalogue.

· The artwork must be original and the use of copyrighted typography, photography or any other type of material is not allowed.

· The artwork must be sent in two phases, a first submission phase during the pre-selection when the low resolution artwork should be submitted by the email that you can find at the bottom of this page, and a second submission phase if your artwork is selected.

offf.ws
