I was pleased to get my hands on a ltd edition packaged copy of Herb Lubalin – American Graphic Designer 1918—81.
A monograph of the legendary Herb Lubalin, one of the foremost graphic designers of the 20th century. Along with Saul Bass and Paul Rand, Herb Lubalin forms a trio of American graphic design greatness.
This meticulously researched book offers a complete career overview of Herb Lubalin, beginning with his early days as one of the original Mad Men in the New York advertising world of the 50s and 60s, and continuing into the years of his greatest achievements as one of the world’s most influential typographers and graphic designers.
Well worth a purchase.

A collaborative book project put together by The Designers Republic to celebrate the 5th birthday of Sheffield-based printers Evolution Print who took care of the printing.
“This isn’t a book about graphic design. This is a book by The Designers Republic™ for Evolutionprint’s 5th Birthday full of creative responses, collabs & conversations from friends, fellow travellers & co-conspirators. This is a book about connections made, bridges being built & the potential of everything multiplied by everything else, by people making their mark, sowing seeds and leaving something to grow. This isn’t a book about graphic design. Maybe it’s not really a book at all.”
The book features contributions from several well-known designers, including Vaughn Oliver, Erik Spiekermann and Neville Brody to name a few.
Strictly limited edition of 500 and not for general sale. The Designers Republic™ have released 50 signed and stamped copies of the book.

A sad day today as news came in from Christophe Martin about the closure of long running design blog CPluv. The decision to close the site followed a vicious hack on the site effectively taking over the domain. This proved too costly to fix for the CPluv team & consequently the is no more.
As a contributor and editor on CPluv for over 5 years the site will be truly missed as a daily source of design inspiration. I made many friends & contacts through the site and as a platform for design inspiration it will be tough to match.
I have archived most of my Cpluv blog posts here on my blog and I will continue to post inspirational findings here.
RIP Cpluv x

The Studio on PlayStation®Store showcases the best in cutting edge art, design, illustration and photography.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), in association with Studio Output, cordially invites you to the opening of a brand new digital art store, The Studio, on PlayStation
®Store. Launched on the 13th April 2011, The Studio will bring the work of some of the most coveted creators of graphic and digital design from across the globe to PlayStation audiences worldwide. Each artist will have original works, fully digitised to create a range of static and dynamic themes downloadable for PlayStation®3 (PS3™) and PSP™ (PlayStation®
Portable).
The Studio is curated and managed by Studio Output, one of the world’s most tuned-in creative design and production companies, and hosted on the free-to-access PlayStation®Network. It offers a platform for cutting edge artists to digitally showcase their work to the world, from photography to typography and illustration to street art.
Twenty selected artists will be the first to share their designs. Celebrated illustrator Anthony Burrill brings two upbeat themes to The Studio; A world of Moving Shapes and Colours and Blocks, while Mr Bingo introduces us to one of his favourite characters in Charlie’s Awfully Big Adventure – a theme based on his sell-out print ‘Charlie does a Kickflip’ from 2010. Fans of English rockers Muse will recognise the work of Jasper Goodall, notably known for his album cover art for the band. The artist shares his bespoke dynamic theme titled Lake of Sorrows. And Rex Crowle, AKA rexbox, featuring in The Studio with his Eyelevator works, also showcases his work elsewhere in the PlayStation universe as one of the creative minds behind PS3 game LittleBigPlanet™. Themes are also set to come from iconic design studios Tomato and Tom Hingston.
Dan Moore, Creative Director at Studio Output comments, “With a focus on limited edition and original artwork, the Studio showcases a selection of the most influential and cutting edge artists and designers in line with PlayStation’s audience, allowing the artist to reach their audience in a more personal way. We’ve worked with each artist and studio to create a series of bespoke digital themes that integrate with the PlayStation interface, adding another element to the work to offer something unique. ”
Nadim Othman, Creative Director at SCEE comments, “The worlds of art and videogames are becoming increasingly linked, and PlayStation provides the ideal platform to make art more accessible for everyone to enjoy. Creative gaming is something that is at the heart of the PlayStations brand and The Studio has been developed in line with this to offer exclusive and original content our audience is passionate about.”
The Studio is the latest arrival on PlayStation®Network, adding to a stunning scene of film, music and gaming, featuring everything from MUBI – the film service featuring the best in independent and world cinema – to the free music streaming service at VidZone™. Memories team member Rishi Sodha has created a special edition of the Memories book. Using the stories and images we have in so far, he has assembled a prototype of Memories with an incredible faux leather embossed cover, and bound it by hand. Pushing his layout skills to the max and printing it on a luscious, pulpy paper stock, he’s created a marvellous object and shown just how awesome the images our artists have created will look in print.
Unfortunately, this wondrous creation won’t be available to buy, however we are moving on with the final version with the aim to make as much as we can for Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres. The prototype has given us loads of printing and layout ideas to hopefully apply in the on-sale version of the book.
Keep track of the project over at http://memories.subism.co.uk/

Today is Jean-Luc Godard’s 80th birthday. To honour their hero, design studio Atelier Carvalho Bernau has created the Jean-Luc typeface which is available for free from their website
The typeface is based on the lettering used in the title sequences for the films. “We didn’t find out who originally made the lettering for these two movies,” they say. “Some speculate it could have been Godard himself – Godard’s interest in graphic design and typography is clear, with many of his other films employing such strong typography-only titles and intertitles.”
