Looks like another stunning book from Unit editions. I have just pre-ordered this as an addition to the studio bookcase.

Type Only celebrates a current trend in typography: type unsupported by illustration or photography. In other words, typography and letterforms on their own – solus.

Through the work of around 100 graphic designers from around the world, Type Only explores the communicative and emotive power of type when used in isolation.

Popular Lies About Graphic Design

c1408d11828a1156b33976a31b7511a9

A new addition to the studio bookcase.

Multi award-winning designer, typographer and TED speaker, Craig Ward, presents his first self-authored book – Popular Lies About Graphic Design. An attempt to debunk the various misconceptions, half truths and, in some cases, outright lies which permeate the industry of design.

Lovingly designed and written both passionately and irreverently, Ward pulls from his ten years of experience to tackle lighter subjects such as design fetishists, Helvetica’s neutrality and urgent briefs, alongside discussions on more worthy topics such as the validity of design education, the supposed death of print, client relationships and pitch planning. In addition, the book features contributions and insights from more than a dozen other established practitioners such as Milton Glaser, Stefan Sagmeister, Christoph Niemann and David Carson making it a must for students, recent graduates and seasoned practitioners alike.

Hort – Marc Romboy & Ken Ishi

Anyone familiar with the work of Eike Konig’s brilliant Berlin-based studio HORT knows they’re up there with the best of them. But even by their own sky-high standards this art direction for the first collaboration between techno musicians Marc Romboy and Ken Ishii is fantastic. Working across a special edition vinyl box set, CD, digital releases, a poster and apparel, HORT worked with photographer Michael Kohls to produce this striking visual language.

HORT said: “Our creative direction nods to music’s physical medium and the techniques involved in its production. Die-cuts make the LP and CD visible, through this method the missing piece becomes a key graphic element.”

Black Hole

“Black Hole” is a series of images, which shows paint modeled by centripetal force. The setup is very simple: Various shades of acrylic paint are dripped onto a metallic rod, which is connected to a drill. When switched on, the paint starts to move away from the rod, creating these amazing looking structures.

The motion of the paint happens in a blink of an eye, the images you see are taken only millisecond after the drill was turned on. To capture the moment, where the paint forms that distinctive shape, I connected a sensor to the drill, which sends an impulse to the flashes. These specialized units are capable of creating flashes as short as a 1/40000 of a second, freezing the motion of the paint.

Anti VJ – Paleodictyon

03 04 06

One of the most inspirational projection mapping projects I have seen for a while by Anti VJ.

Originally a video mapping installation created for the singular architecture of the Centre Pompidou Metz museum, Paleodictyon The App is its digital counterpart.

Developed by Simon Geilfus, who co-directed the original piece, the application makes use of the same video mapping technique, however here it is instead transposed to a digital space, where virtual projectors give light to a 3D model of the museum. A digital replica.

More information about the Paleodictyon installation can be found here.
